Program Coordinator, Europe Unearthing the Past www.shawnirelandpottery.com My career as an artist is integral to my teaching of Classical art on UGA’s Europe: Unearthing the Past study abroad program. When I lecture on Pre-Classical and Classical pottery and its reception, in museums across Europe, including the National Archaeological Museum, Athens, Greece; the Vatican Museums; the Bargello in Florence; the Louvre; the British Museum; and the Victoria and Albert Museum, I draw extensively on my professional experience as a potter and painter. I relate the manufacturing and artistic process to the object displayed in a glass case to illustrate to students the concept of “end-to-end” art, from the artist’s workshop or studio to the museum. The role of pottery in “making myths” and its impact on trade in the ancient world are also explored in museum lectures.
